Dear citizens of the world of Cologne,
We, the World City Development Workers of the School of Political Hope (SdpH), hereby announce that on 10 December 2018, International Human Rights Day, Cologne's Ebertplatz will be solemnly renamed by us as 'Global Democracy Square'. Although the brutalist vision of Ebertplatz was originally to make it one of the most liveable public squares in Cologne, it hit the media headlines as a 'fear space' after a fatal knife attack in October 2017. The gratifying civic engagement of local social actors and especially artists from Brunnen e.V. against the plan to build a wall on site "for security reasons" and finally also the cooperation with the city administration led to the founding of the platform 'Unser Ebertplatz' (Our Ebert Square) to (socio-)culturally upgrade the square until its expected reconstruction from 2021.
